32 And after they had crossed the river Jordan he did make them mighty unto the driving out of the children of the land, yea, unto the scattering them to destruction.
The real point Nephi is making in this verse is coming up in
the next few verses, but I think there is at least one other noteworthy thing
here. It’s important to note that the Lord will
accomplish His purpose and keep His covenants, even if the obstacle to be faced
seems insurmountable. The children of Israel were to posses the land covenanted
to Abraham, even if there were other people already living there. In verse 35
we’ll learn the nature of those people, and that they had been warned to
repent. I’m sure there were many more people in these established nations, and
much better prepared armies, yet the Lord led Israel into battle, and time
after time they won the day, usually completely wiping out whole societies, not
just conquering. The Lord could have accomplished the same thing with some
other means, like He did with Sodom and Gomorrah, but He chose to perform a
different kind of miracle this time.
